Thomas Schandl interviewed developer Stephane Corlosquet about his efforts to integrate Semantic Web Technologies within Drupal 7. The Open Source Initiative, SMILA "SeMantic Information Logistics Architecture", was mutually launched at the end of 2007 by empolis, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and brox IT Solutions GmbH to create a standardized infrastructure for information management. The project is embedded into the work of the eclipse community, which consists of more than 180 companies and research institutions, which all have the common objective of developing open and standardized platforms. Since June 2008, SMILA attained the status of an official eclipse project and is co-funded through the THESEUS project by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.

Andreas Blumauer (Semantic Web Company) talked with Brian Donnelly about a new system on the market called "Semantic Discovery System", which helps to do sophisticated queries across existing datasets without any knowledge about SemWeb technologies. In this talk Brian also discusses why complex scripts or triple stores should not be exposed to the end-users anymore.

In September 2008, the Austrian research project 'DYONIPOS Use case BMF' won in the category Science Award – Most Innovative E-Government Application which was part of the 8th e-Government competition under the patronage of the German Ministry of Internal Affairs. The use case was carried out at the Austrian Ministry of Finance (BMF) in collaboration with Know-Center Graz and m2n - consulting and development. It focused on the implementation of an intelligent knowledge management system that reduces the amount of effort needed for search and analysis within administrations. The competition within the Science Award was open to federal, state and local administration in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Tassilo Pellegrini, Head of Transfer & Media at SWC, spoke with Michael Granitzer (Know-Center), Doris Ipsmiller (m2n) and Josef Makolm (BMF), who were involved in all stages of the use case.

Bo Hu is a researcher with a focus on applications of Semantic Web and Web 2.0 technologies in e-learning and e-healthcare. In this interview, he talks about the potential of Semantic Web and intelligent agent technologies in medicine and life sciences, a domain that he describes as uncompared "in terms of the amount of data to be processed, the diversity of data formats, and the time-critical and safety-critical requirements." The interview was led by Tassilo Pellegrini.

From June 17 - 18, 2008 international experts will gather at the Linked Data Planet conference in New York to discuss latest trends and future prospects in the commercialization of the semantic web. Tassilo Pellegrini talked to conference chair Bob DuCharme about the status quo of Semantic Web in the US and the many facettes of one of the most promising developments for the next generation internet.

From September 3 - 5, 2008 TRIPLE-I 2008 will take place in Graz. TRIPLE-I is a joint venture of the conferences I-KNOW, I-MEDIA and I-SEMANTICS covering the topics Knowledge Management, New Media Technologies and Semantic Systems. The last years conference attracted 550 participants from 33 countries.

W3C announced today the publication of SPARQL, the key standard for opening up data on the Semantic Web. With SPARQL query technology, pronounced "sparkle," people can focus on what they want to know rather than on the database technology or data format used behind the scenes to store the data. Because SPARQL queries express high-level goals, it is easier to extend them to unanticipated data sources, or even to port them to new applications.

Despite of impressive efforts and innovativeness of the open source community little attention has so far been paid to alternative financing models of software development. CoFundOs - a project from the University of Leipzig - addresses this problem.
