Die Suche im Web hat unsere Vorstellung davon nachhaltig geprägt, wie “Suchen” und “Finden” generell, also auch im Intranet zu funktionieren hat. Der Schlüssel bei der erfolgreichen Suche nach Informationen speziell im professionellen Umfeld liegt vielmehr im Einsatz von semantischen Technologien als dies im Web notwendig ist. Gründe dafür und aktuelle Trends bei Enterprise Search Technologien soll dieser Beitrag von Andreas Blumauer diskutieren. With Parallax David Huynh has shown that one of the most interesting semantic web applications can be built around browse and search applications which offer tools for doing complex search queries. The Open Source Initiative, SMILA "SeMantic Information Logistics Architecture", was mutually launched at the end of 2007 by empolis, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and brox IT Solutions GmbH to create a standardized infrastructure for information management. The project is embedded into the work of the eclipse community, which consists of more than 180 companies and research institutions, which all have the common objective of developing open and standardized platforms. Since June 2008, SMILA attained the status of an official eclipse project and is co-funded through the THESEUS project by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.

In September 2008, the Austrian research project 'DYONIPOS Use case BMF' won in the category Science Award – Most Innovative E-Government Application which was part of the 8th e-Government competition under the patronage of the German Ministry of Internal Affairs. The use case was carried out at the Austrian Ministry of Finance (BMF) in collaboration with Know-Center Graz and m2n - consulting and development. It focused on the implementation of an intelligent knowledge management system that reduces the amount of effort needed for search and analysis within administrations. The competition within the Science Award was open to federal, state and local administration in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Tassilo Pellegrini, Head of Transfer & Media at SWC, spoke with Michael Granitzer (Know-Center), Doris Ipsmiller (m2n) and Josef Makolm (BMF), who were involved in all stages of the use case.

W3C announced today the publication of SPARQL, the key standard for opening up data on the Semantic Web. With SPARQL query technology, pronounced "sparkle," people can focus on what they want to know rather than on the database technology or data format used behind the scenes to store the data.
