Aung San Suu Kyi Shares Good News via Skype
Arguably the world's best-known political dissident, Aung San Suu Kyi spent 15 years under house arrest in her native Myanmar (Burma). After her release in 2010, she maintained a busy schedule of speaking to various heads of state and her many supporters around the globe. However, Suu Kyi's last passport was revoked some 24 years ago. She has not set foot outside of the country in decades. Not once. But that hasn't stopped her from touching peoples' lives from Myanmar to Morocco to Mexico. Whether the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize recipient is addressing students in a packed Virginia Tech auditorium or accepting humanitarian awards, she uses Skype in innovative ways to be present and spread her pro-democracy message. This week, Suu Kyi joined former President George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush via Skype at the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington, DC. The event was held to launch a program that will document the stories of dissidents around the world who risk their own lives to help their countrymen move toward greater freedom and democracy. While other dissidents from China, Cuba and Syria, were honored for their selfless work, Suu Kyi's appearance was clearly the highlight of the Council on Foreign Relations event. Long a supporter of Suu Kyi, Laura Bush stated, "[Aung San Suu Kyi's] example shows people everywhere that political isolation and prison cannot silence the call for liberty." With Skype projected on a massive screen behind the stage, Suu Kyi was able to share some words of encouragement with the other human rights and democracy advocates. She reassured them by saying, "Persevere. You will get there in the end, just go on." Suu Kyi also took the opportunity to confirm to the world that she has, in fact, just received her new passport from the Myanmar government. She is making plans to travel to the UK - where her sons live - and to Norway, where she will finally pick up her Nobel Prize... some 21 years after it was originally awarded to her. Whether Suu Kyi makes her speeches in the future by Skype or in person, she has already shown how Skype can be used to overcome isolation and to make the world a smaller, better place. We are sure that others will follow in her footsteps.
Utilizing Big Data to Unlock Innovation in Education
I'm always looking for new areas of innovation. One topic in particular that I've been keeping an eye on is big data, as this emerging area has the potential to change multiple industries and generate tremendous value. This has already been happening in private sector industries like retail, where companies like Wal-Mart have been using predictive technologies to mine the trillions of bytes of data regarding shopper behavior it has collected to forecast what products its customers would need in different situations. For example, ahead of Hurricane Frances in 2004, Wal-Mart learned that strawberry Pop-Tarts increase seven times their normal sales rate and beer was the pre-hurricane top selling item. This resulted in stores in the path of the storm being stocked with these items, which sold quickly. Even more interesting are new efforts in industries like education and government. For example, at Stanford University, big data is being used to research how students learn in online classes. As Daphne Koller, a professor at the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, told The New York Times last month, "In most education research, teaching methods are tested in small groups, comparing results in different classrooms. With small sample groups, research conclusions tend to be uncertain and results are often not available until tests at the end of school semesters. But in an online class of 20,000 students, whose every mouse click is tracked in real time, the research can be more definitive and more immediate." Recently, the Obama administration announced a $200 million dollar "Big Data Research & Development Initiative" to help accelerate the pace of discovery in science and engineering, strengthen national security, and transform teaching and learning. Efforts like these are of most interest to us at Skype, as we believe that any acceleration to improving and modernizing teaching is a good step in the right direction. It is our sincere hope that advances in education technology - be it big data or video calling - can help further revolutionize the way our next generation learns.

Together with our partner Comcast, we've debuted Skype on Xfinity today in Boston and Seattle, enabling Comcast customers to communicate with family and friends through Skype HD video calling on their televisions. By the end of this week, the offering will also bring Skype audio and video calls and instant messaging to the living rooms of Comcast Xfinity subscribers in Detroit, Indianapolis, Miami, Atlanta, Augusta, Chicago, Pittsburgh and Harrisburg, PA. This offering is the result of our close collaboration with Comcast to deliver an innovative solution to the marketplace and demonstrates Skype's continued leadership in video communications. This partnership enables us to bring video calling into the heart of the home - the living room - where it enables people to share life's experiences both big and small. With Skype on Xfinity, you'll be able to watch TV and send instant messages or make a Skype video call at the same time. This way, you and your friend or family member will be able to watch the same game or reality show together and share your reactions to the same moments in real-time. You can even choose whether you want the TV program or the Skype video call to be presented in full-screen or Picture-in-Picture views. We're also excited about how easy this offering makes it for customers to get started. Comcast will simply send its subscribers a Skype on Xfinity-enabled set-top box adaptor, camera, and a special remote with a built-in keyboard for instant messaging. Then, all the recipient needs to do is plug the adaptor into their existing cable box using an HDMI cable, connect to your wireless network, and register or login to Skype to start making Skype video calls. Skype on Xfinity will be rolling out to additional markets throughout the summer. For more information, please visit www.xfinity.com/skype.

The Evolution of the Skype Community
By Claudius Henrichs, Skype Community Manager As the head Community Manager for Skype, I am fortunate enough to be able to work with many of you every day that are part of our online community. For me, it is especially rewarding work because I love to hear how Skype helps connect you in truly unique ways. Just today, I read a post about how Skype allowed a grandmother thousands of miles away to attend her grandkid's wedding remotely through a video call. However, while the online Skype Community today is very active and vibrant, a lot has changed since its inception 10 months ago. Here is a look into how our online community has evolved over time, what changes we've noticed and what improvements we have in store for the future. OUR USER COMMUNITY The Skype Community today is comprised of close to 1 million registered passionate Skype users from all corners of the globe. While English is the primary language of choice, there are local language boards in French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Here are some other fast facts about the community: Over 3 million page views per month (more than double that of two years ago) A new post is made on average every 80 seconds 30,000 new members register to join the community each month There are three main types of community users: first, there are people with technical questions looking for help; second, there are Skype customers looking to give feedback about using Skype features and suggest enhancements to our products; and third, there are users looking for language exchange. Perhaps the most interesting thing we've observed is that we see a lot of people switching between those groups - e.g., once they've received a reply on their technical support question, they'll stay in the community to continue providing product feedback and exchanging their stories with others. At the very heart of the community are three very passionate dedicated Skype team members: Edmund Read, our Head of Contact and Media; Stephen Crosby, our Twitter Community Specialist; and myself acting as Community Manager. While we're a small group, we are continually supported by people from across the company, from the product teams to customer service. FROM TECH SUPPORT TO COMMUNITY The Skype Community was originally conceived as a place solely to address technical problems and to provide customer service support. However, over the past months, it has really begun to transform from a technical-focused support forum to a highly engaged user community. A reoccurring theme we hear from many people is that our online community provides a great opportunity to join conversations and share stories with people around the world. Much of this conversation is driven by our Skype super users - members of our community who are the most active participants and proactively help new Skype users by answering their questions. We didn't initially expect this, but with the help from our super users the community has become the best and fastest growing place to discuss anything related to Skype. As a result of this, we've expanded to reach more people on Skype thanks to our added offerings beyond the walls of our community on Skype.com. On Skype's Facebook page, you can ask your questions on the "Support" tab. These questions end up in the community and receive replies from other users there. Our @SkypeSupport Twitter handle helps us solve issues quickly in 140 characters or less. Finally, the newly launched SkypeSupportNetwork YouTube channel highlights the best instructional content in video. ON THE HORIZON While the community continues to grow, we're always listening to you and making improvements based on your feedback. Currently, we are working on deeper integrations with our social media channels, enhancing our existing offerings on Skype's Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Additionally, we plan to continue hosting more community #SkypeTalks live chat events (Q&A sessions with the community and members of our product teams), as they've proven to be a great opportunity to listen closely to you. We would like to build off of these successful chats, offering more opportunities for you to engage with experts across Skype in order to further improve our products. Likely the biggest improvement we'll be making will be providing even more ways for you to access the Skype community. I don't want to miss this opportunity to thank the thousands of people who make the Skype community flourish, especially our super users, who dedicate so much of their own time sharing their extensive knowledge about Skype to help other Skype users every day. Please check back here in the next few weeks for a new blog post series where I'll be shining a well-deserved spotlight on several of our super users. And if you haven't done so yet, we welcome you to join our thriving online community.
Skype and The Education Foundation Partner to Launch The Learning Lab
Recently, I announced the work Skype is doing with DonorsChoose.org, and in further pursuit of Skype's goal of connecting one million classrooms across the globe through Skype in the classroom, we have recently partnered with the UK's first cross-sector education think tank, The Education Foundation. Technology's impact on learning has been identified by The Education Foundation as a key challenge for the future and an area where a combination of practical projects and big thinking can make a real difference. This is a view held by Skype and reflected through our development of the Skype in the classroom program. Our partnership was solidified this week with the launch of a state-of-the-art, technology-rich professional development center for education professionals and leaders in the heart of London - The Learning Lab. It will be used as a testing ground for new approaches to the curriculum, technology and the world of work. The space can also be used as an event and showcasing area for education organizations, policy makers and businesses across the UK. At The Learning Lab launch event, guests had the opportunity to see the facility's fully-equipped, reconfigurable classroom, featuring practical examples of it in use from teachers, students and partner organizations. As part of the tour, our flagship social good initiative Skype in the classroom was showcased. Attendees at the launch were able to speak directly with Amy Rosenstein, a 3rd-grade teacher at Concord Elementary School in Ardsley, New York about her experiences of using Skype in her classroom. Our hope for The Learning Lab and our partnership with The Education Foundation is that more opportunities will be created for teachers and students to use technology in the classroom and barriers to communications can be removed, allowing them to connect and learn from others around the globe. To see how you can get involved in The Learning Lab, visit www.ednfoundation.org or to register for Skype in the classroom, visit education.skype.com.

Merchant Risk Council award
We are delighted to share that Skype has won the 2012 Merchant Risk Council Spotlight award, recognizing our innovative and industry leading approach to managing risk. The MRC is a group of preeminent risk professionals brought together by the goal of preventing online fraud. Many companies were nominated for the award, including Facebook, Google, Spotify, Paypal, and many others, so we're incredibly proud that Skype received the award despite such intense competition. The award was awarded for Skype's approach to: • Improved or innovative cross-functional fraud and risk systems • Payment acceptance successes • Industry collaboration • Commercial impact Following significant fraud reductions in 2010 and ongoing investment in automated development, Skype has industry-best levels of protection. The Anti-Fraud Department (AFD), part of Skype's Business Operations Group, has moved from a 'cost of doing business' towards a 'commercial insight team,' which allows unrestricted spending on the part of our costumers, without the specter of fraud hanging over every purchase. The results of Skype's commitment to preventing fraud have been overwhelming positive, in terms of both customer satisfaction and now with this award, international recognition from Skype's e-commerce peers. Neil Ward, Skype's VP of Business Operations, commented, "This is an incredible achievement by the Tallinn-based anti-Fraud team, who have embraced our principles of promoting profitable and sustainable growth; more importantly this enhances the level of trust in the Skype brand with our customers and partners." Diarmuid Considine, our Fraud and Payments Operations Manager, will accept the award on behalf of Skype at the MRC Annual Conference in Las Vegas at the end of March. Congratulations to everyone involved!

Skype Wins Three Webby Awards!
A few weeks ago, we shared with you our love for The Webby Awards. After being nominated in two categories in this year's awards, we are now thrilled to announce that, for the second year in a row, Skype has been awarded three Webby Awards for its Skype for iPad and Skype for iPhone apps! Thanks to your votes, Skype for iPhone received the People's Voice Award in the Best Use of Device Camera category. Skype for iPad also won both The Webby Award and People's Voice Award in the Social (Tablets and all other devices) category. We're committed to giving our users the best experience possible and work hard to ensure our products work for every one of our tens of millions of mobile users around the globe." In reaction to the awards, one of my colleagues, User Experience Designer Dan Winston shared that designing for the iPad has been a brand new experience - mixed with trepidation and excitement - for everyone at Skype. He noted that translating a product already much loved by users onto a new device was a difficult challenge, so we're delighted to have received this recognition for our work. Lastly, we want to thank you, the Skype community, for your votes that helped us win two People's Voice Awards for Skype for iPhone and Skype for iPad.
Show how you really feel with Skype Humoticons
As part of Skype's new "It's Time for Skype" marketing campaign about putting humanity back into how we communicate with others each and every day, we have pledged to make the web a little more human. Given the popularity of the Skype emoticons as a way of sharing your emotions with each other, we've developed and introduced a new Facebook app to put a more human spin on these and help you share your gestures and expressions with the world: Skype Humoticons. The Skype Humoticons app allows you to mimic classic emoticons by capturing images of your own facial expressions (from an existing photo or by snapping a picture with your webcam), which you can then post in our Humoticon gallery or share on your Facebook wall. And if you really want to fully express yourself, make an animated Humoticon by taking up to five pictures to show others how you really feel. Once you're done, you can also download your Humoticon, or copy its URL, to share it in an instant message. Most importantly, Humoticons are meant to be fun. Try creating classic faces such as wink , big smile , sad face , tongue out , or thumbs up , as well as some more unusual options. Or just freestyle it and do whatever you want to express the way you're feeling. Because nothing can replace the look on your face. Get started creating your own Humoticons at http://www.skypehumoticons.com and bring humanity back into the conversation.

Your Ticket Back to Humanity
It started with a simple insight: "When did it become okay to text Mom Happy Birthday?" This question challenged us to think about the way people communicate in today's digital age. Digital tools help us share and get news faster than ever before and have helped bring people together across the globe. Skype has always stood for connecting people in a meaningful way. That is, fostering quality conversations between people each and every day, even when they are apart. With Skype you can share a story, celebrate a birthday, hold a meeting, work collaboratively on a presentation or homework assignment - just about anything that allows for daily interaction between you and your world. This insight led to "It's time for Skype," an integrated marketing campaign designed to get the world thinking about, talking about and ultimately engaging with everything Skype has to offer. That includes video chat, group video chat, screen sharing, instant messaging, unlimited calling, mobile calling and more. We kicked off the campaign in London on Monday, April 2nd, by placing bold messages all around and even underneath the city. Media placements included a takeover in one of London's busiest Tube stations, billboards along some of its most trafficked roadways, in and around Heathrow Airport, and messaging at bus stops and on buses throughout the city. Today, we are happy to announce the launch of the core of the campaign, a large digital media push that includes innovative ads which have been created to focus on specific Skype features. These will be displayed on hundreds of highly trafficked sites. In addition, through three short online videos to be featured across some of the top online publishers' sites, we have captured the "humanity" we are challenging you to embrace. We encourage everyone to visit www.itstimeforskype.com, where you will be greeted with the message: "Welcome Back to Humanity." The landing experience lets you explore Skype with family, friends, and colleagues using Facebook Connect or via fully interactive product demos designed to recreate a typical day in the life of the average Skype user. With Skype, the everyday benefits are endless. We are excited about helping you stay human well into the future...welcome back to humanity.
Technology is Essential to Enabling the Learning Process
"If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow." - John Dewey As this presentation from the Pew Internet Organization details, regardless of what students choose to do after they are finished with their education, technology inevitably will play a role. The wealth of new software tools, media platforms and research technologies that are rapidly transforming how our society communicates can be effectively employed to educate future generations. I've heard first-hand the stories of the positive benefits for education. Recently, students from an Englewood, NJ school district connected with students in China through a video conferencing session to test their Mandarin skills. The sessions helped immerse the students in the region's culture, letting them continually hear the language from native speakers and learning it through the benefit of real-life interactions. Here are two major factors why technology is essential to learning: Greater access to information and experiences - The Internet enables information democracy, providing access to classroom support materials well beyond the scope of school libraries. As a result, educators are now able to offer their students a greater variety of truly interactive exercises and experiences. Perhaps the limitations of time and money will prevent a school field trip to a museum, but using technology like Skype, teachers can connect their students with a local museum director to give a virtual tour of an exhibit. Improved efficiencies - In the absence of technology, everyday research for classroom assignments can become a huge burden on a student's time. No more. Advanced computational tools allow students more time to focus on important conceptual tasks such as problem posing and problem solving. Additionally, technology can enable previously inaccessible learning experiences at low costs. There was some resistance when computers were introduced into classrooms in the 1980s. Now, schools and teachers across the globe are using computers with internet access to enrich the experiences of their students with hands-on learning, developing their technical skills to better prepare them for life after school.
