A new report from Ofcom has revealed that the internet now contributes a fifth of all advertising revenues in the UK. The research showed that £1 out of every £5 generated through advertising comes from the web, putting the UK ahead of nations like Sweden and the US in terms of the overall proportion of revenues made on the internet. Ofcom's study also indicated that UK consumers are becoming more comfortable with technology, with each web user spending an average of 14 hours a week on the internet and 50 per cent having visited a social networking site in the past. In addition, the UK has the highest digital TV penetration out of all of the 16 countries surveyed, while sales of mobile broadband dongles in the UK have soared in the last year. Recent figures from Point Topic suggested that there will be about 683 million broadband lines worldwide by 2013 compared with 393 million in the 40 biggest broadband nations in 2008.
