Are you in the St Albans area? Fancy a coffee? [Dean 'Warrior Coach' Grimshawe]
24/6/2009 | external link
Hi Fellow Ecademists,
I have recently moved area and have since found myself in a place where I hardly know anyone so I'm building new contacts from scratch. I am looking to meet and share resources with anyone and everyone in the St Albans area, even if you're only passing through for the day.
I actually have settled in London Colney which locals will recognise is slightly outside of the city centre but I am only a short journey away.
I have a great wealth of resources that I can share within myself and also I am fortunate enough to have a great network from my previous experiences so if I am not the right contact for you then it is very likely that I will know who is.
Give me a chance and get in touch for a coffee it'll be great to meet with you!

M&S chief forgoes bonus Versus BA plead for staff to take a pay cut [Bob (Employee Engagement) Hayward]

M&S boss to forgo part of bonus
Only a few days ago BA pleaded with staff to work for no pay... ~ Now M&S chief Sir Stuart waives a bonus of £1.6 million...
I wonder which strategy will gain more employee engagement and discretionary effort, which is better at brand building internally and externally, which company you'd rather work for..?
Would you give up "your pay" to motivate others or demonstrate Leadership..or is this just cynical hot air..?

Flight Delays [John Guinn]
24/6/2009 | external link
According to the Daily Mirror, if you want to start your holiday with a delay, you should have a flight on Thomas Cook, MyTravel or First Choice.
These airlines have been revealed as some of the UK's worst offenders for delays in 2008.
CAA statistics show 15% of flights with Thomas Cook Airlines, trading as MyTravel, were more than an hour late.
There were an additional 356 flights taken by Thomas Cook holidaymakers which were delayed by more than an hour. First Choice had 811 delayed flights.
Long haul scheduled flights also had problems, with 1 in 5 Air India flights suffering delays and 16% of Qantas flights did not leave on time.

Why Bother Going To Networking Meetings [David Winch]
24/6/2009 | external link
Register for my 'Pricing By Value' Workshop in Cambridge on July 7th - Backed by my Money-Back guarantee
Why do you bother going to networking meetings? Why do you
Get up before dawn?
Have a shower before the central heating's come on?
Drive several miles in the cold, dark and rain?
Consume rather more caffeine and cholesterol than you ought to?
So what's your answer? While you're thinking about it, let me tell you mine. I go to networking meetings for four key reasons:
To meet strangers
To recruit and train my surrogate sales team
To be recruited and trained by other people into their surrogate sales teams
To enjoy myself, and help others do the same
Succeeding In Spite of Yourself [David Winch]
24/6/2009 | external link
Register for my 'Pricing By Value' Workshop in Cambridge on July 7th - Backed by my Money-Back guarantee
What do I mean by 'succeeding in spite of yourself'? Well, many businesses will say they are getting what they believe to be acceptable results. Of course they would like to do even better but either they are not really sure how to achieve this, or they are unaware that improvement is possible for them, and anyway, we've just said the results are acceptable!
Many businesses I meet are suffering from one or more of these faults:
They don't focus on any particular type of customer
They don't know what is likely to be appealing to their customers
They don't know why their customers buy from them
As a consequence they continue to:
Waste money
Underperform
Squander their potential

Branding - Creating the Right Impression for Your Business. [Regine Wilber]
24/6/2009 | external link
First impressions last - whether they are good and bad. Without wanting to repeat the obvious, here are some thoughts about first impressions in business. The way you present your business is how people will perceive you. Perhaps one of the reasons brands exist is because we like to by from people, people we can read and sympathise with, people we respect and trust. With trading being remote and global, 121 purchasing is rather rare and branding fulfills the function of lending the business a personality. As humans, we like to categorise. This may happen subliminally but it does mean that if your brand is not aligend with your service, you may well appear to be a low-end small company when in reality you have an incredible product range, lots of credentials and a offer superior service.

http://www.skepdic.com/lawofnumbers.html
When I started out in Ecademy 11 years ago I wanted to conduct an experiment on network size (BIG Numbers) and see whether or not it changed performance. What you read below are some of my findings. They are not conclusive. They are the state of the moment. Being an ENTP I find it hard to reach conclusions and make decisions. My best thinking prior to this is Networking for Life published in May 2003 written with Paul May. Paul is a superb writer. This is still my favourite book. Some thoughts from January 2003 are here so you can see where my mind was 6 years ago. There were circa 10,000 Ecademy members back then.

Twitter seems to be social networking topic of the month. So I thought I'd add my 10p in here. As with almost any other topic we discuss on Ecademy, there are as many opinions as there are people willing to share them!
And so here is my experience of Twitter.
>>> Twitter is one of the most valuable business tools I've used during my entire career. Can I live without it? Sure. Does it make things easier for me? You bet.
>>> Initially (like most people) I struggled a bit with it. I wasted time. I got lost. I followed the wrong people. I got annoyed when I asked one of the yBC experts who I most respect to explain Twitter, and he said "oh easy, it's the cocaine of social networking." Gee, thanks.

The House always wins [Mark Williams]
24/6/2009 | external link
A string of big-name mortgage lenders rushed to increase the cost of their fixed-rate deals this week.
But market specialists were insisting homebuyers and those looking to remortgage have not missed the boat, though the best deals may not be around for long.
Warnings that lenders were looking to lift the cost of their most popular deals were front-page news a week or so ago, after Nationwide raised the cost of its fixes by up to 0.86%, and Northern Rock increased its five-year fixed rates by 0.2%.
Sure enough, other big players followed suit. Abbey and Alliance & Leicester, both part of Spanish bank Santander, lifted rates on a number of fixed-rate mortgages by between 0.25% and 0.5%.
So the message is quite simple - and perhaps it is best summed up by using a gambling analogy.......The House always Wins!
Thanks for your attention

More Twitter followers - part 2 [Ian Godman]
24/6/2009 | external link
A quick recap:
Gained 410 followers in 20 hours then the site went down.
I sent and email to Jordan Embry at the address given in the pay pal account. I got a response back within 30mins saying that the site would be back soon. It was back and running the next day AND they had extending the VIP period so that I still get the full 7 days.
The only small niggle I have is that I did not receive an explanation / apology email which would have been nice.
Over the weekend I gained an additional 300 followers. Lost a few because I did not set the "follow those that follow me", silly error on my part reasonable action by those that unfollowed. If you are not prepared to follow why should you be followed?

FOUR things you never knew about your mobile [George Emsden]
24/6/2009 | external link
4 THINGS YOU PROBABLY NEVER KNEW YOUR MOBILE PHONE COULD DO
These are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies. Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival. Check out the things that you can do with it:
FIRST Emergency
The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile; network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialled even if the keypad is locked. Try it out. but don't press "Call"
SECOND Have you locked your keys in the car?
Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their mobile phone from your cell phone.

On Friday the FTSE 100 closed up 66 points at 4,345. Positive news from the Mining Sector buoyed the index. More good news was released over the weekend so the FTSE may rally today. On Friday the Dow Jones fell 15.87 (0.2 %) to 8,539.73, with just over half of its 30 stocks posting losses. The S&P 500 index rose 2.86 (0.3%) to 921.23 and the Nasdaq gained 19.75 (1.1%) to 1,827.47. The stock market consensus seems to be one of caution and consolidation rather than a continuing rally this summer. All the major indexes closed the week down on Friday for the first time since the second week of May.

I came across this today and thought I would use it to reiterate an important point:
Despite the internet being a relatively free place, using other people's work for any reason is wrong and more importantly traceable. DON'T DO IT WITHOUT PERMISSION.
There are three very good alternatives
1) Take your own photographs.
If you're fairly good with a camera, decide what sort of pictures you want and take them yourself. Copyright is with the person taking the photograph not with the people inside it. Do be careful when photographing logos and art work etc obviously. If you're not good with a camera or want some very professional pics, hire a photographer to create them for you. They're not as expensive as you might think and can often be cheaper than option 2 if you use lots of pictures and get them taken in bulk.
2) Stock photos.

When looking for new web hosting services, it's easy to get fixated on the amount of bandwidth that comes with the hosting plan. But tread carefully and choose wisely because extra bandwidth often means less features and you'll probably end up paying more than you thought.
Extra Bandwidth = Less FeaturesMany web host providers attract new business by offering extremely large amounts of bandwidth, some of gigantic proportions that you could never possibly hope to use. But check the small print because in return for giving you lot's of bandwidth, they'll often charge you more for access to some of the essential website features such as security tools, scripts, additional domains and databases.

Event #1 - The Wellie Throwing competition.
I approached the starting line, picked up the wellie, and began folding it down. ( A tactic commonly used by people who
don't know how to throw a wellie). The Judge said I was forbidden from doing so, for it would give me an unfair advantage.
I was perplexed as each competitor had to throw the exact same wellie. Undeterred, I unfolded it back to normal size, ran
to the starting line and thew it. WWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, the bloody thing landed in a tree, and fell to the ground

Putting ethics before profit [Jeff "Peace is our Business" Mowatt]
24/6/2009 | external link
An interesting article in the Guardian today where Peter Singer describes a new movement sweeping Harvard which aims to set an ethical standard in business.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/jun/21/harvard-mba-business-ethics
It's quite coincidental, that here yesterday I blogged about a homeless man's work which helped launch 10,000 businesses, for it is he who's been pioneering such a concept for the last 13 years since his service on the Clinton re-election committee.
I added a comment to the article describing how he'd followed Harvard into Russia after the collapse of the rouble in 1998 and the disastrous Harvard managed Defense Enterprise Fund which is central to the Davild Mclintick article How Harvard Lost Russia.
It's progress certainly, but whether the man who's led the way will be airbrushed out of the picture is perhaps another ethical question.

So we are really interested in hearing your views of Twitter. Whether or not you are new to using or not. Whether you love Twitter or not, Whether you use it for Business or not, Whether you are from the UK or elsewhere.. Everyone's views are important to us.
Ecademy's Problem and Twitter's Virtue [Graham Hunt]
24/6/2009 | external link
Ok time to be a bit controversial Thomas and Penny. Why are people spending much more time away from Ecademy and in other networks? Over the last few months I have found so many people who "used to be" on Ecademy but now don't spend any time here (Obviously their profiles remain). I find it a shame because the potential for Ecademy is excellent but there is one major difference between Ecademy and other networks, the prevalence of spam.
So on Twitter in order to receive spam you need to opt in to a person's tweets. You have to follow them before you see what they are doing, twittering about etc... If they start spamming you then you just opt out and no longer see what they are doing. Same on Facebook, social median, and just about any other platform. (Don't use autofollow on Twitter as this is the best way to get spammed)
What will you choose? [Alun Jones]
24/6/2009 | external link
I was twittering on Twitter the other day and I read someone's tweet that went along the lines of "Don't beat yourself up for making the wrong choice". Grrr! For some reason that really quite irritated me - or, to put it another way, I chose to allow it to irritate me!! "Now why was that?", I asked myself. Hmmmm - taken me a week to think this through.
Let's look at choices and life. Are there wrong choices? I know there are times when, in hindsight, we can look back and think that we made a wrong choice. When playing a game of cards where we have to choose which card to lay down to win (or lose) a trick we may think after playing the card that we'd made a wrong choice. But did we? Did we really?

As a huge believer in the universal power of divine timing, I am sure that if we seem obstructed in our plans, it is because the timing, or the outcome we are desiring in not in line with our greater journey.
This weekend I pulled out my bag of nordic runes. The cold stones rumbled through my fingers and I was happy to take guidance from the symbols. I pulled "wholeness" and when reading the suggestions, I came across a passage that I often refer to and reflect on at those periods things seem to be "stuck".
"You may see fit to withdraw or retreat in the face of a pressing situation. Know that such a retreat is a retreat in strength; a voyage inward for centring and for balance. Timely retreat is among the skills of the Spiritual warrior".
For some weeks I have been in a period of "retreat", whilst I didnt appear to be moving forward at my usual pace. I have just been "listening" until the answer became clear.
Have you been RT'd on twitter today? [James McBrearty, the twittering tax man]
24/6/2009 | external link
One of the great things about twitter is how quickly you can reach a wide audience.
The RT(retweet) is a good way to increase your message coverage instantly. If people like your message they will send it on to their followers and your circle therefore increases.
There is a free website that has really interesting statistics available on your twitter account: Twit_Analyser
It makes it easy to see how many people your tweets have reached in total, by retweeting, under the 'reach' tab. You can also use it to check on the reach of your friends as well.

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003)
After the base jump and landing on the freighter,
Lara pulls the cabin window blind and looks out onto an evening view of Hong Kong.
What is this? Million dollar home page gone Hollywood?
There are almost no lights at all on the skyscrapers except for a dozen or so brand logos.
The shot lingers for six seconds with a little pan to the right to squeeze one more logo onto frame.
There's no cabin lights on the boat going past so the shot may have been 'day for night' to make it a logo insertion task rather than a window light removal task (far more work)
Product placement.
I would guess at least $100,000 per logo shown.
Go take a look at the film again.

Pigs eat ham [Wong Giap]
24/6/2009 | external link
Last night I was up watching Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. A commercial came on with two pigs dining in a fancy restaurant, eating a ham. The one pig says, as he's got a piece of ham poked up on his fork, "I like a nice ham."
The other one nods.
Pig #1 continues, "You think that's wrong? We're just enjoying the flavors of a fallen friend."
Pig #2 says, "True."
Then Pig #1 goes, "I'll tell you what's wrong, a cell phone company that charges hidden fees."
The commercial goes on a bit more (check out "boost mobile commercial pigs" on You Tube for the video) and at first sight of seeing this last night, I almost crapped my pants. I am to say the least, outraged with this commercial.
I would like to say, first of all, if you know the truth about the animal farming industry, you will know that this "pig-eating-pig" scenario is not just a hook for a commercial; it actually happens.
Jehovah Witness Finds Kingdom Come [Wong Giap]
24/6/2009 | external link
There's a Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall down the road from our house. People are there all the time. I think they go to church every night around 8 or something. I don't know anything really about the religion and I think I get it confused with Mormon's just a little. But passing this place leads me to a couple of questions.
1. I thought these people knocked on doors? I haven't seen one to date around my neighborhood. Is there a big neon sign that says "heathens" above our house that keeps them away? Just once, I would like them to stop by and try to talk to be just so I can annoy someone other than my husband and dog. Maybe I just answered my own question.
2. Why is someone always there? What are they keeping in that building that needs to having someone there all the time? Isn't church normally on Sundays and if you've been really naughty on Wednesdays? I wonder if the FBI would find bodies or something...

Outsourcing versus a personal assistant versus do-it-yourself? [Ann Andrews]
24/6/2009 | external link
Had an interesting conversation with members of my new Mastermind group last week. We were discussing the merits of outsourcing various tasks to experts; versus actually having one personal assistant versus doint things yourself.
In a small business it is always a juggling act of time, finances and skills. Over the years I have had a few personal assistants, but it never quite worked out because my business requires a lot of different skills (admin, computer skills, knowledge of the speaking and training world, good customer skills and now web 2 skills). So I found it more cost and time effective to outsource things to 'experts' in that area.
I also think it is important as a sole trader, to work out the things I have to do myself and the things I WANT to do myself.
Just wondered how other sole trader/small businesses manage these challenges? ann

Why Ronaldo and Kaka are worth every penny! [Dean 'Warrior Coach' Grimshawe]

Why Ronaldo and Kaka are worth every penny!
The Summer is still young yet the market is flooded with reminders of just how important Brand appears to be in securing interest and driving revenue.
Football has seen the transfer market go stir crazy over the past few months and regardless of whether you love, loathe or are totally immune to the sport, everyone has been made aware of the biggest summer signings heading to Spain. Real Madrid have spent well in excess of a £100 Million securing the signatures of Christiano Ronaldo from Manchester United and Kaka from AC Milan. So what convinced a single football club in Europe to part with such a serious amount of money? Brand. And they don't come bigger than Ronaldo and Kaka when it comes to football.

When is a spade not a spade? [Simon Jones "Web Wizard"]
24/6/2009 | external link
... when it's a product... not funny? it shouldn't be, let me explain:
A man walks into DIY Emporium, he looks at spades, he chooses one, buys it and leaves. A perfect sale, no problems ...except that he didn't want a spade...
What this man really wanted was a hole in the ground to plant some potatoes. He wanted to cultivate some easy vegetables to cook at next year's BBQs. He wants to be able to tell his friends 'I grew them myself' and hear about how much better they tasted compared to store bought. He will feel proud and inspired to try tomatoes next year.
He is a little worried of course, what if he plants them in the wrong place? what if the ground is too wet/soggy/dry/cold/dark/light? What if it all goes wrong?
Not adultery if the woman is over 50 [Andrew Woolley (Family law)]
24/6/2009 | external link
Adultery is still one of the most often given reasons for a divorce, although it is often surely the case that the marriage had at least partially broken down before that happened?
Adultery used to be the main (and close to the only) ground for a divorce in the past. Not much evidence was needed only 60 years or so ago. This might be because Judges and lawyers were too embarrassed to ask that awful question of a lady, "have you had sexual intercourse with a man other than your husband during the marriage, other than by rape?" That is the plain English definition of adultery now.
But things are improving! A case in 1948 (Barnacle) showed, to us now, some startling views of adultery. See here for some fascinating views of when adultery might or might not be....adultery!

Dating for the over 50s: how is the industry responding to its fastest growing market? [Conrad Morris]
24/6/2009 | external link
An interesting article appeared in the Guardian the other week, posing the above question. There is no doubt the over 50s (and in some cases, the over 60s, 70s or 80s, as the article rightly points out) is a booming demographic in online dating. Many dating services are tailored specifically for older daters - such as www.singlesover60.co.uk and www.datelineseniors.co.uk - simply by providing profiles of members who are within a selected age bracket. The Guardian also refers to the concern that some older daters can experience when 'releasing their details to the cyber abyss', and suggests that a dating service such as www.datelineplatinum.com which provides member vetting and a more personal member service can be a solution.

The SCRAP BOOK Quest [George Watts]
24/6/2009 | external link
2 Hour Work Week Game
Hello, my name is Confucious, (ummh, I'm not really, but just play along with me) the great Chinese sage born in 551. Today I'm going to teach you how to become a money magnet without focusing on money. Building a business for money is not a good reason to go into business.
Doing anything for money ultimately treats money as an end goal and in the process makes it more important than anything else in your life. Working for money is a wonderful recipe for unhappiness.
Money isn't the real goal. The real goal is to take specific actions that enriches your life and the lives of others. The more you serve others, the more money flows to you.
The SCRAP BOOK Quest (4 action steps needed):
1. Get a scrapbook (blank pad) and write "Stuff That Enriches Me" on the front
2. In the middle of each page write 'Stuff That ENRICHES My Life" and put a cirle around it
Things to tell your web design team to get the best result [Simon Jones "Web Wizard"]
24/6/2009 | external link
There is more to a website than a nice design, good SEO and lots of traffic.
So what if you have 1000 visitors per minute, are they buying?
What if you have a design that looks gorgeous, is it working?
One of my first clients was a wedding videographer. His main requirement was that it didn't look expensive. If the site looks expensive, the product looks expensive. This business was a part time hobby, he had a full-time, well-paid job already and wanted to offer his hobby as a service. This was step 1 on my analytical journey to realising there's more to websites than to create a beautiful, flashy design and send people to it.

Turn Your Alarm Clock Into An Opportunity Clock [George Watts]
24/6/2009 | external link
Let's face it. Most of us struggle to get up in the mornings.
Would you like to get out of bed with zest, joy and inner calm whizzing through your body?
Impossible?
Well, not if you USE this very simple NLP tool. It works. I've given this tool to many of my clients and they love it.
Are you ready to turn the struggle to get out of bed into excitement?
The Opportunity Clock
Step 1: Your alarm clock is no longer an alarm clock. It's now an opportunity clock. Say it to yourself right now. "My alarm clock is an opportunity clock." Go on...nobody is watching. Say, "My alarm clock is an opportunity clock."
Step 2: When your opportunity clock rings in the morning that ringing will instantly trigger you to get excited about all the new opportunities the day will bring. To create the trigger say something like this to yourself (either internally to yourself or out loud),

Bullying tackled in town schools
Efforts to reduce bullying in Swindon's schools are underway after 41% of children surveyed by Ofsted claimed they had been bullied in the last year. The 2008 Ofsted "TellUs" survey also found that 29% of pupils worried about being bullied and that 24% had been bullied travelling to or from school. Representatives from schools, youth groups, the council and police are now working together to tackle the problem.

VCP - The importance of member photos [Niek van Duivenbooden]

Does Ecademy have a policy in this (no linking to other members unless you have a picture) or are we as BlackStars supposed to address these members?

Nothing Is Impossible [sandra seman]
24/6/2009 | external link
NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE
You can have everything you want if you really want it. The important thing is to decide if you really want it. We spend so much time chasing after things we think we want and when we finally get them, guess what, that's right, we don't want them anymore! Once you have decided you really want something, the key to achieving success is desire. Build up desire within your body and mind, until it is within every cell of your body and mind. Until it is so within every cell of you body and mind. You desire it so strongly that you live and breath it. The thought is in your mind first thing when you wake in the morning and last thing when you go to sleep at night. Whatever it is that you want start acting as if you already have it. A new house - buy something for it, a new car, start looking for insurance prices, a new love, start feeling loved. This impresses it on the subconscious mind even more.

Top 10 FATAL mistakes made by novice property investors ... [Vanessa Warwick]
24/6/2009 | external link
1. Not having a reason for doing this. Over my five years of speaking at property events and presenting at workshops and seminars, I have come across hundreds of people, who, when asked why they want to get involved in property say "I wanna be rich". That, in my opinion, is not a clear enough reason. There must be some specific goal that you want to aim for, an outcome, a purpose that will drive you to achieve success. "Being rich" is too flaky, too undefined, to wide a goal to aim for. Think carefully about why you want to get involved in property - to fund your child's education, to prop up a pension, to allow you to follow your dream, whatever that may be. Without a clearly defined goal, your efforts will be unfocussed and you will not be committed to moving forwards step by step.

I'm saying this because, once again, Ecademy Spain's had another flurry of new members come in and shout about their wares without introducing themselves or taking on board what we say on our Home Page, or our Club Blog - and they have become offended and huffy at being called to account for their Spam, saying that we state we are a club that encourages business .....
Yes, we are and yes we do, but the Club Blog I wrote last year is the context within which we open our doors to business discussions - NOT "Buy My Nosepieces" cut and paste stuff that has, in our case, no relevance to Spain whatsoever.

Small Business Server Appliances Reduce the Cost of IT Ownership [Sandeep "SEO Kid" Amin]
24/6/2009 | external link
Most IT systems depend on IT people as much as toddlers depend on their parents. To remain secure and operational, the majority of traditional small business server solutions need constant updating, upgrading, patching, configuring, supporting and repairing. The result is that ongoing maintenance costs often far exceed the initial purchase price.
Ongoing IT support costs for a typical small business are 73% of the total ownership costs, so it's no surprise many find systems maintenance a costly headache. A small percentage of small businesses even choose ignore it!
Small Business Server Appliances are an excellent alternative
Small Business Server Appliances look after themselves, rather like grown ups. This delivers a major advantages with the time and money you'll save and the hassle you will avoid.

Cost v Value - Ben Gunn paid with Treasure for a piece of Cheese [Stan Wright]
24/6/2009 | external link
Have you noticed that in this current economic climate, there has been a big emphasis put on controlling costs? That is all well and good but don't fall into the trap of knowing the cost of everything and the value of nothing.
Don't just go cutting costs without really understanding the value that particular thing you intend cutting may actually have on your business; as with Ben Gunn and his toasted cheese, your customer may well hold something you are intending to cut with a much higher value than you think.
Do you believe cutting costs can have a bigger negative effect on your business than the savings?

YOU have the same influence as any large corporation [James McBrearty, the twittering tax man]
24/6/2009 | external link
I was at the ecademy Guildford/4Walls event last weekend, where Vanessa Warwick was talking about how things have now shifted from the vertical to the horizontal, which I found to be very inspirational:
The ladder has fallen
In the past the closed, restrictive & controlling society meant that there was a vertical ladder - with individuals at the bottom and large corporations at the top.
The old ways meant that the more you spent on marketing, the more your message was heard. The costs involved prevented individuals and small businesses from competing at the same level. Vanessa talked about how this is no longer the case, and it is a return to the individual.
With the spread of the web and social media, now one individual can have the same or greater influence, regardless of amount spent.

It totally sucks you in so you forget who you are. And where you are.
And what you're doing.Since the demise of my stereo I have to listen to audiobooks with
earbuds connected to my iPod in a waterproof Aquapac. So the effect is
even more potent - it's like I'm mainlining the book straight into my
brain.
What if motivation doesn't last? [Dean 'Warrior Coach' Grimshawe]

After a speech one day, Zig Ziglar was approached by someone in the audience who said:
"Zig, it was a great speech, but...motivation doesn't last."
Zig said, "Bathing doesn't either. That's why I recommend it daily!"

How do you use Twitter [Tom Gillispie]
24/6/2009 | external link
I have a Twitter account, of course, and use it regularly. I've posted more than 270 updates; I have about 109 followers, and I'm following 77 people.
The problem is: I have no idea how to decide how to follow people. At first, I'd get an email message that so-and-so was following me, and I'd follow him/her back. If the updates were helpful, funny or whatever, I'd stick them out. If not, I'd jettison them. And I suspect people let me go the same way.
So how do you handle Twitter? Do you have a plan? Is it piecemeal (the way I do it)? Are you finding work, love or whatever on Twitter?

This time next year.... [Fraser 90 Day Marketing Plan Hay]
24/6/2009 | external link
Stop for a second.
Think about your marketing for a moment.
Remember the good old times, when deals just kept coming your way, every single week....
Think how much business your competitors are now generating.
Think how much of an increase in sales, turnover and profit you'd like in 12 months time.
Now complete the following sentence....
"This time next year, my marketing will be so much better, if only I could......."
Complete the sentence. Write it down, and pin it on the wall beside you.
And if you need help completing it, you might want to sign up for the Free marketing audit below.

Great minds discuss ideas.... [SAACHI I'Mamura]

.......Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events.
Small minds discuss people. - US Diplomat Eleanor Roosevelt
I came across this quote which someone had posted on facebook. It is very short,
and yet I thought it gives the point and discuss various type of people in a unique way.
Is it worth discussing people with great ideas only. No, I don't think SO....... We're all
different and unique.

Stupid question, i know. But still: why do we need connections for business? [Ronald Wopereis]
24/6/2009 | external link
It makes sense to ask stupid questions.
They shine a light on knowledge that we think is there while, looking deeper, is not there at all.
One of the no-brainers is that for business you need connections.
So the question is: what is their importance?
Why do we need connections for business?
Best regards, Ron

Does it always have to be too good to be true? [Colin Fu]
24/6/2009 | external link
I like almost every human races on earth... very very skeptical... I tend to think with my logical mind. I will try to rationalise or justify my actions so that whatever I do are always right!
One very typical example - whether I buy this expensive toy or not. I tend to rationalise it. When I don't buy it, I would say it is too expensive, though deep down I know is a good value. However, whever I came across something that is really good and I know for a fact that they are of good values, though I do not buy it, then I woudl say it is "too good to be true"...
Is not my fault is it? If it is my fault, then every single person around me is at fault too as we are kidn of similar?
So what do you think? You think you are like that too?
Is that healthy? or we are just sicked?

The Striker [Tim Kidson]

If every Managing Director in the land knew how to add most value to their business, and then got on with it, this would be worth a full 1% to the GNP of the UK.
"Don't you just hate ordinary days?" A business owner complained to me.
"Oh, I just don't like the 'grunt work' part of the job." he continued. "All the forms, the rules and the legislation we have to follow get worse and worse. I just want to concentrate on the front of house, the sales and the marketing."
"I hate being at a desk. I do my emails, most of them anyway, out on the road these days"
Dave was really getting into his stride now. "That's where I play my best football. Up front. I'm a striker!" he exclaimed. And he raised his fist as if, for all the world, he had just scored the winning goal in a Cup Final.
"And that's where I add most value to this business." He spat the words out as if there was an argument about it.
And it was the most important thing he said.

Today I want to tell you about my colleague a pioneer in the field of business for social purpose. Last year, for his efforts in raising awareness of appalling conditions in homes for disabled orphans, BT (our national telephone and broadband provider for those reading this outside the UK) selected him for their annual Seen and Heard awards

I'm always offering to help new Ecademists, and it occurred to me that I can put some of that advice in one blog. This is an updated version -- I'm always learning about Ecademy. Maybe this'll help folks I'd never meet otherwise.
People often tell me I have a great profile page; one guy said he thought it was the best profile page he'd seen on Ecademy. I wouldn't go that far; I've seen some good ones.
But I do know I have a good profile page. As a career journalist, I've written stories, taken and handled photos, edited copy and laid out pages for nearly 30 years. I'm a professional; it's my business.
I had a full profile with mug shot, logo, a photo or two and nearly 50 words when my page came up in late July of 2008. You don't need to go that far, but I'm always impressed when I see a newcomer with photo, 50 words and profile in place. It's a sign of competence and caring.
My rogue ghost got powerless and harmless. [Rabin Ghosh]

My rogue ghost got powerless and harmless.
Now I do not need to tame the rogue ghost that was forcing me to commit mistakes using my own procrastination, indecisions, fear, and greed etc.
My incomplete knowledge of astrology on stock market had the enough power to inspire me to sell my small holding in Nifty Future right on 12/06/2009 when the Nifty was at 4630 levels but the knowledge was not complete so the inspiration was a weak one that resulted in procrastination, indecision, fear, greed etc. The rogue ghost became powerful due to all those weakness in me. I took time to overcome those weaknesses or the rogue ghost and got successful to tame the rogue ghost only when the nifty had slipped to 4492 levels from 4630 levels of 12/06/2009.
